LDS Church Shooting Today-One Killed and Two Critically Injured After Gunfire Erupts at Kearns Utah Funeral

A deadly shooting outside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Kearns, Utah, has left one person dead and two others critically injured, prompting a major law-enforcement response on Monday, August 17, 2026.

The gunfire erupted while people were gathered for a funeral at the church. According to police, authorities had received calls earlier in the day from people planning to attend the funeral who warned that there could potentially be trouble. Officers were subsequently asked to maintain a visible presence at the location.

At approximately 11:25 a.m. local time, officers positioned near the church heard gunshots coming from the south side of the property. They immediately responded toward the area where the gunfire had been reported.

Police found one male victim in the roadway suffering from critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. Two additional male victims were also located and taken to hospitals with critical injuries. Authorities said they believe the injuries suffered by all three victims were related to gunfire.

The shooting occurred outside an LDS meetinghouse in Kearns. One nearby meetinghouse serving the community is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, although authorities’ reports should be relied upon for the precise location associated with the incident.

Police said officers encountered a vehicle carrying one of the wounded victims as they attempted to leave the scene. Officers pursued the vehicle and eventually stopped it nearby, allowing the injured person to receive medical attention.

The violence prompted additional security measures in the surrounding community. Several schools in the Granite School District were briefly placed under lockdown or secure protocols as a precaution while police investigated the shooting.

Investigators are now working to establish what led to the gunfire. Police said the incident is believed to be isolated, while possible gang involvement is among the factors being examined. Detectives were interviewing numerous witnesses who had attended the funeral as well as victims receiving treatment at hospitals.

The shooting is particularly distressing because it occurred during a funeral, when families and friends had gathered to mourn and remember someone who had died. Instead, those attending were confronted with another violent emergency.

Authorities have not indicated that the shooting was an attack directed at the LDS faith or the church itself. Current reporting describes the gunfire as occurring outside the church during the funeral gathering, with investigators focused on determining the relationships and circumstances surrounding those involved.

The incident also comes months after another deadly shooting outside an LDS meetinghouse in Salt Lake City. That January 7, 2026 incident left two people dead and six injured during a funeral. It was a separate case and should not be confused with Monday’s Kearns shooting.

As the investigation continues, police are expected to examine witness accounts, surveillance footage and other evidence to determine who was responsible for the gunfire and what triggered the confrontation.

For now, the LDS Church shooting today in Kearns remains an active criminal investigation. One person has died, two others remain critically injured, and authorities continue working to establish the circumstances behind the violence and determine whether additional suspects or arrests are involved.
